Maximum 10 people at a time due to space and safety considerations.

Currently, no booking is required to use the workshop - it operates on a first-come, first-served basis. However, you must complete the appropriate training level before using any equipment. A booking system for workshop time will be implemented in the future as the space becomes busier.

🎓 Training

Training depends on what equipment you want to use:

  • Level 1 (Green)Hand tools and basic workshop safety - 3-hour session including H&S intro
  • Level 2 (Yellow)Pneumatic and battery power tools, chop saw, angle grinders
  • Level 3 (Purple)MIG welding, pillar drill, and advanced equipment

Students gain independent access to equipment progressively based on completed training levels.

No, the training levels are progressive and build upon each other. All students must complete each level sequentially.

Important: These workshops function as both training sessions and competency assessments. Students must demonstrate their ability to safely operate tools and follow workshop protocols.

For students with hand tool experience: We offer a condensed 1-hour session focusing on health and safety and space usage (instead of the full 3-hour Level 1 session). However, you'll still need to attend to demonstrate competency and learn this workshop's specific safety procedures.

Training sessions are booked through the SISO system.

SISO Booking: https://tuslsad.siso.co/

Level 3 involves two supervised sessions with practice time between. The second session is a competency check to ensure safe operation. You're expected to practice between the two sessions.

🛡️ Safety & Personal Protective Equipment

You must provide:

  • Steel-toed boots
  • Overalls (boiler suits)
  • Safety gloves (leather or cut-resistant)
⚠️ No entry without complete PPE (boots + overalls + safety gloves)

The workshop provides:

  • Safety goggles/glasses/face shields
  • Hearing protection (ear mufflers)
  • Respiratory masks
  • Welding masks/gloves

Wear gloves: For handling materials and sharp edges

Remove gloves: When operating machinery with rotating/moving parts (pillar drill, chop saw, angle grinder, pneumatic/electric tools)

Buddy system required for: Power tools, angle grinders, welding equipment

Not required for: Hand tools and green tools

Minimum two people must be in the space during high-risk activities for safety.

Limited use only: Emergency calls, timers, or taking a single photo

Why restricted: Safety concerns (distraction) and equipment damage (metal dust/debris can enter devices)

For occasional use: You can borrow PPE for a couple of sessions to try out the space.

For regular use: We strongly recommend purchasing your own PPE for hygiene, fit, and availability reasons.

Personal PPE ensures proper fit and hygiene, which are crucial for your safety and comfort during extended workshop sessions.
